Apple iOS 8.1 release date to be Monday, Oct 20th, more details unveiled

During its 2014 iPad event, Apple disclosed a few interesting details about the iOS 8.1 update. Interestingly, it seems that with this software update, Apple is quickly reacting to customers feedback. iOS software engineering head Craig Federighi made this particularly clear, mentioning that Apple has been listening to what users have to say.

The first big change is that the camera roll that went away with iOS 8, is now back in the Photos app with iOS 8.1. The new version of the operating system will also support Apple Pay.

The other big change coming with iOS 8.1 is the iCloud Photo Library public beta that allows you to store the first 5GB of files (not just photos, but videos as well) for free, and then pay for additional cloud storage. Here’s what it costs:

  • First 5GB free
  • 20GB for $0.99 a month
  • 200GB for $3.99 a month
  • More tiers available, up to 1TB
Finally, the iOS 8.1 release date is set for Monday, October 20th, the same date as the roll-out of Apple Pay.
