We've been bombarded with leaks and rumors about the upcoming next-generation iPhone, and after seeing molds for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 story, today, a picture of the front panel of Apple’s next smartphone appears. The image allegedly originates straight from a China factory where iPhones are put together, and it corroborates the story we've been hearing so far about a larger-screen next iPhone.
The picture shows a possible iPhone 6 with looks closely resembling those of the iPhone 5s, save for the difference in size: we have the same round physical key below the display, as well as the earpiece above the screen.
The difference in display size between the iPhone 5 (the device that’s to the left) and this alleged iPhone 6 is also fairly large. We made some crude measurements, roughly sizing the screen diagonal of the iPhone 5 pictured on the left against the alleged iPhone 6. Here’s what we found out:
iPhone 5 screen diagonal measures ~234 pixels (based on the leaked image below)
iPhone 6 screen diagonal measures ~277 pixels
Making the simple math, we have a difference of around 18% between the two displays. If you take the iPhone 5’s 4-inch display, and add 18% to it, you arrive at a ~4.7-inch display. So basically, we can say with a fair amount of certainty that this leaked front panel of the iPhone 6 features a display measuring around 4.7 inches.
What we cannot say, though, is whether this is an authentic image, nor whether this is the final design for Apple's next-gen iPhone. With all these things in mind, we’d take all this image tells us, but add the usual grain of salt, just in case.
